Abortion access saves lives
Rates of maternal mortality — which includes deaths before, during and within 42 days of childbirth — were as high as 51.1 per 100,000 live births in the Mississippi Delta region, according to the report. Vermont, Connecticut and California had the lowest levels, ranging only up to 18.6 per 100,000.
The dearth of care may become more severe as applications for medical residencies in states with near-total abortion bans have fallen since the Dobbs decision.
Staffing shortages have several downstream effects that can lead to lower-quality care. (BN)
Green energy takes mining
In a clear indication that timelines for transition are off from reality, a new S&P Global report on mine investments has estimated that timelines for mine development from discovery to output:
- 29 years in the USA
- 27 years in Canada
- 20 years in Australia
- 34 years in Zambia
USA mine investments are also unreliable. Canadian mine investments take a long time to come online, but the report says they almost always do. Not so much in the USA.
The exploration budget is 81% larger in Canada than in the USA.
Why is this? Finance will tell you it is regulatory burden.
The reality is that in the USA lawsuits drag out the process. In Canada, it is environmental impact assessments and consultation with affected communities.
In a world where mining is going to take the place of oil and gas extraction as a major natural resource sector, it is important to understand the difference here and not let the right tell us it is taking too long to develop these mines.
